Leave a lasting legacy

Since 1945, the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club has been the premier youth development organization on island.  Today, we currently have over a 1,000 members and are still growing!  Remembering the Club with a bequest from your estate will help to sustain and strengthen our commitment to the island’s youth for years to come.

The Nantucket Boys & Girls Club has been fortunate through the years to benefit from bequests made by dedicated supporters.  A bequest is a gift from your estate – a transfer of cash, securities, or other property made through your estate plans. You can make a bequest to the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club by including language in your will or living trust, leaving a portion of your estate to the Club, or by designating the Club as a beneficiary of your retirement account or life insurance policy.

Some of the advantages of creating a bequest include:

  • A bequest costs nothing now, yet it offers the satisfaction of knowing that you have provided for the Club in the future.
  • You retain control of your assets throughout your lifetime.
  • You may modify your bequest if your circumstances change.
  • Gifts to the Club from your estate are exempt from federal estate taxes.
  • If you let the Club know of your plans, we will be able to thank you now and recognize you as a member of our Legacy Society with a special island gathering of all members in the summer.

Types of Bequests

There are a number of ways you can make a bequest to Nantucket Boys & Girls Club.

Specific Bequest. A specific bequest involves making a gift of a specific asset such as real estate, a car, other property or a gift for a specific dollar amount. For example, you may wish to leave your home or $10,000 to Nantucket Boys & Girls Club.

Percentage Bequest. Another kind of specific bequest involves leaving a specific percentage of your overall estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 10% of your estate to Nantucket Boys & Girls.

Residual Bequest. A residual bequest is made from the balance of an estate after the will or trust has given away each of the specific bequests. A common residual bequest involves leaving a percentage of the residue of the estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 30% of the residue of your estate to Nantucket Boys & Girls Club.

Contingent Bequest. A contingent bequest is made to charity only if the purpose of the primary bequest cannot be met. For example, you could leave specific property, such as a vacation home, to a relative, but the bequest language could provide that if the relative is not alive at the time of your death, the vacation home will go to Nantucket Boys & Girls Club.

Bequest Benefits

A bequest is generally a revocable gift, which means it can be changed or modified at any time. You can choose to designate that a bequest be used for a general or specific purpose so you have the peace of mind knowing that your gift will be used as intended. Bequests are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.
